The tradition of Madhubani paintings was kept alive through centuries by the women of Madhubani and other areas of Mithila in Bihar. The pain ngs were done on the walls of mud huts and depicted Hindu religious motifs. Characterized by line drawings filled in with bright colours these pain ngs are now done on handmade paper, cloth, and canvas.
