Papiermache was brought to Kashmir from Persia by Sufi saint Mir Sayyed Hamdani, in the late 14th century. Originally used on wooden furniture over centuries, it moulded into kar-i-munaqqash, the local name for Kashmiri Papier-mache. Naqashi, the final stage of hand painting which gives the products their unique look, explores various themes.
